Wednesday, June 21, 1961: Desalination plant

A seawater desalination plant in Freeport, Texas, becomes operational with President Kennedy "activating" it via remote control from the White House. The plant is capable of producing a million gallons of fresh water a day, to be used by Freeport residents and Dow Chemical.
